No point in waiting for the idea of the century to get started

No point in waiting for the idea of the century to get started
Alexandre Mars shares his experience of starting a business and explains what he wishes he had known a few years ago, before launching his first companies. A look back at his presentation at the last Franchise Expo Paris, which took place last March.

For Alexandre Mars, there's no need to wait for a big idea to get started! There's no such thing as a big or small idea; there's simply the idea that aligns with who you are and what you want to do. If you're waiting for the idea of the century, you'll probably never get started. Trying to find THE perfect idea puts immense pressure on yourself, which will only hold you back. Keep in mind that you can be successful with an existing business and that you don't necessarily need to invent something that's never been done before. Find an activity you enjoy, where you're good at what you do, and that allows you to earn money…

To succeed in entrepreneurship, Alexandre Mars also advises identifying what interests you, because you're going to work hard, and if it's not aligned with your passions, it could be difficult and you might not fully commit to your project. You also need to define what you're good at, and perhaps even what you excel at, but also identify a feasible project and avoid embarking on something unattainable.

The entrepreneur then addresses a crucial point that warrants consideration: should there be competition in the sector you plan to enter? It's important to be vigilant, because if there's no competition, it might mean there's no market. Consequently, there might be no demand. Hence the importance of conducting market research to identify demand and needs.

Frequently asked questions from future entrepreneurs

Do you need a revolutionary idea to succeed in entrepreneurship?

No. Many successful businesses develop within existing markets. Success often relies more on project execution, the quality of the offering, customer knowledge, and the ability to differentiate oneself than on a completely original idea. The important thing is to choose a business that aligns with your skills, ambitions, and interests.

How to find a business idea that suits your profile?

A good business idea often arises from several factors: your skills, your experience, your passions, and market needs. Before searching for the perfect concept, it can be helpful to identify what you enjoy doing, the problems you know how to solve, and the sectors in which you want to work.

Why is it important to choose a project that truly motivates you?

Starting a business requires time, energy, and perseverance. When the project aligns with your desires and values, it becomes easier to overcome difficulties and remain committed in the long term. Motivation is often a determining factor in entrepreneurial success.

How can we know if a project is feasible?

Before embarking on a project, it is recommended to assess the necessary resources, required skills, anticipated investments, and market potential. An ambitious project must remain realistic and achievable with available resources. This analysis helps avoid pursuing an unattainable goal.

Is the presence of competitors a good or bad sign?

Contrary to popular belief, competition can be a positive indicator. It often shows that a market and demand exist for the products or services in question. The goal is not necessarily to eliminate all competition, but to identify what will allow you to differentiate yourself and provide added value to customers.

Why conduct market research before starting your business?

Market research helps to understand consumer expectations, analyze existing players, and assess the project's commercial potential. It also helps to identify industry trends, development opportunities, and potential risks before investing time and money.

Is it better to wait for the right moment to start a business?

Many entrepreneurs postpone their projects, waiting for the perfect moment. However, this moment rarely exists. Thorough preparation, a good understanding of the market, and a clear vision of one's objectives are generally more important than seeking perfect timing.

How to maximize your chances of success in starting a business?

Successful entrepreneurs often share several common traits: they know their market, listen to their customers, surround themselves with the right people, and are willing to question their assumptions. Preparation, adaptability, and perseverance are often the best allies for transforming an idea into a sustainable entrepreneurial project.
